IM Issue 80 – May 2014

U.N. Human Rights Council Maintains Anti-Israel Bias with Five ResolutionsThe United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) recently voted in favor of five resolutions explicitly singling out Israel — the latest instance in a well-documented history of bias against the Jewish state.Four of the five resolutions approved by the top international human rights body castigated Israel’s treatment of Palestinians, and were approved by a 46-1 vote. The fifth resolution took aim at Israel’s legal administration of the Golan Heights, which the Jewish state has maintained since 1981, as well as the “suffering of the Syrian citizens… due to the systematic and continuous violation of their fundamental and human rights by Israel.” It received a 33-1 vote. The United States was the only voting member to oppose all five resolutions. click Israel Matters! 80 to read the complete issue. Will open with the free Adobe Reader or equal.

By LES SAIDEL 04/11/2014   Matza Photo: REUTERS While the prohibition against eating leavened bread applies to all seven days of Passover, the biblical commandment to eat matza applies only to the first day (and the second day in the Diaspora). Subsequent rabbinic opinions, like Rabbi Eliyahu of Vilna (The Vilna Gaon), maintain that the duty to eat matza applies to the entire seven days and has since become the custom. Matza made with liquids other than water, such as egg or fruit juice, is called “matza ashira,” or rich matza. Due to its softer consistency, it was permitted for use during Passover (not on the first night, though) by those who cannot digest regular…

April 2014: From TBS President Bryan H. Pines

April 2014: From TBS President Bryan H. Pines

I have been collecting Passover Haggadot for many years. I am most intrigued by the thousands of versions available. The obligation to retell our children of the exodus from Egypt may have been an influence in why the manuscripts are highly illustrated. When studying the printed versions of the Haggadah through the ages, we develop an appreciation of how the celebration of Passover has been continuously evolving. Our sense of freedom is challenged and our solidarity within the community is contested.

Apparently he fell from a cliff while hiking alone. He was 79 years old. When we first met, we were two poor kids at Rutgers who could not afford to live in a dorm. Due to the generosity of Rabbi Julius Funk z"l, we were allowed to live in the two wings of the Hillel House stage, in exchange of setting up chairs and tables for events and locking up afterwards. We were immediately attracted to each other with our backgrounds in Europe and of…
