We will be celebrating Yom Ha’atzmaut on the evening of Monday, May 5th, corresponding with the Hebrew date of the 5th of Iyar. In Israel, the joyous festivities will begin immediately after sunset following Israel Memorial Day. Twelve torches will be lit individually representing the twelve Tribes of Israel. The celebration continues throughout the next day. People are encouraged to spend the day outside by going on hikes and having barbecues. Historically, Israel Independence Day began on May 14, 1948 and centered on David Ben-Gurion reading the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel. This carefully crafted seven part document has as much relevance now as it did sixty-six years ago during the reaffirmation of our Jewish homeland.
VFI - Sar-El Trip ~ Rescheduled to July 2014VOLUNTEERS WANTED! Due to a change in schedule, I am once again seeking TBS members who are interested in forming a group to join me in participating in a program in Israel, July 17-31, in association with Volunteers for Israel (VFI) and Sar-El. We have a number of congregants who have expressed interest but we have room for more! We can’t seem to address antisemitism without running to the world and screaming that we’re being persecuted, rather than standing up strongly in defiance, aware of our own inner strength. The Holocaust has scarred us, a yetzer hara (sneaky bastard of a voice in our heads), that keeps trying to tell us how we are defined by our past, controlled by events that happened to us, instead of using those moments as points of growth. MOVIE: “DIAMONDS IN THE SNOW” Monday, April 28, 2014 at 7:00 pm at Best Video. Free for Temple members. Best Video Café will be open for coffee, soda, etc. In recognition of “Holocaust Remembrance Day,” the Adult Education Committee is proud to present a showing of the critically-acclaimed, award-winning film, “Diamonds in the Snow.” It tells the story of three children, Ada, Shulamit, and the filmmaker herself, Mira. These women recount their memories of a childhood spent hiding from the Nazis and reflect the courage of the Polish people who helped them survive. We are pleased that Mira Reym Binford will introduce the film and lead the discussion after the one-hour documentary. Adult Ed Committee member, Ira Kleinfeld will introduce Mira Binford.
