When is lying “OK”. When is it a problem? How did a culture of lying arise? What are possible solutions? Professor Gottdiener spent 41 years as a university professor and as a full professor, was on faculty at University of California, CUNY and SUNY Buffalo, He specialized in Cultural Studies while publishing 16 books and 100 articles. In 2010 he was given the Lynd Award for Lifetime Distinguished Career Achievement by the American Sociological Association among many other outstanding awards. I Came In

I Came In

We have a custom around here that a Bar or Bat Mitzvah can ask me to give a sermon at their ceremony on a subject of their interest. Usually, this means that I have to read a young adult book or watch a current popular show. A recent Bat Mitzvah, Sadie Meltzer asked me to deal with one of the most serious subjects there is, dealing with bad things you have no control over.

Summer is now, finally, upon us. After a wet and cool spring, we have heat, we have sun and we have more heat. Activities slow down at the synagogue, holidays outside of Shabbat and Tish’a B’Av are on a break until the fall and many people take the summer months to travel. (more…)
