Presbyterians Consider Divesting From Companies doing Business With IsraelA major body within the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) voted recently to recommend that the church vote to stop investing in three companies “until they have ceased profiting from non-peaceful activities in Israel-Palestine.” The vote proposed by the General Assembly Mission Council on whether to continue investing in the corporations -- Caterpillar, Motorola Solutions, and Hewlett-Packard -- will happen at the church’s General Assembly, a national meeting of church leaders that will take place in late June and early July in Pittsburgh. Miriam’s Musings: Pensando en Pesaj

Two weeks ago I came back from Miami from the reunion of my chaverim of Hanoar Hatzioni B'Cuba, this Zionist youth movement's branch in Havana. For the first time I saw people I spent my teen age years and haven't seen since 1957. Soon after Fidel Castro replaced the previous Batista capitalist dictatorship with a communist dictatorship, all but three of us have left the island. Those of us from TBS who went last March on the charitable mission saw the perpetuation and the crumbling of this Cuban communism. The picture below is of some of the Hanoar Hatzioni leadership in the late 1950s. I, George Alexander, am the leftmost in the first row.More pictures and my narrative are available from those years…

April 2012: Wise of Heart

A few weeks ago, we read from the parsha T’tsavveh in the book of Exodus.   In this parsha, we learn about the high priest Aaron’s sacred garments and “accessories.” For those of you unfamiliar with the passage, the Torah scrolls in our ark are dressed like Aaron with a robe and sash, a crown, and a breastplate.
