ISRAEL BRINGS IN DIGNITARIES FOR ITS 60TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

Israel’s President, Shimon Peres, announced that a May conference marking its 60th birthday will open with a tribute to Israel’s staunchest ally, the United States. In attendance will be President Bush and Barbra Streisand. “After 60 years we want to stand up and say ‘thank you America,'” Israeli President Shimon Peres said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Change to The Chesed Project

The Chesed Project has been providing rides and other services for those with long term health care needs. Beginning on April 28, Diane Alderman will be coordinating our volunteers.  If you can give even two hours a month, please contact Diane at 281-3489 or at chesedtbs@gmail.com.We have many volunteers ready to make friendly phone calls or visits, do shopping, or run other errands for those in our community who may be in need of some assistance.  If you know someone who who could use a little help now and then, please contact the Rabbi or Diane.  We respect the confidentiality of all our requesters.Both giving and receiving  can be a mitzvah.

May 2008: The Summer of ’82…

I had lunch the other day with an old friend I had never met before.  How can that be, you might ask?  The woman I had lunch with serves on the board of directors of Camp Ramah in New England and although we had never personally met, our common experiences and strong feelings about Jewish camping and Ramah, in particular, made it seem like we had. IM Issue 13 – April 2008

EIGHT KILLED IN TERRORIST ATTACK AT JERUSALEM YESHIVA

Eight teenage students were killed and nine others were wounded when a terrorist entered a crowded Jerusalem yeshiva and opened fire on March 6th. The head of the Zaka emergency service described the scene after the shooting as “like a slaughterhouse.” Three of the wounded in the attack at the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva were in serious condition while the other six were slightly hurt.

April 2008: Haman, Pharaoh and the Chief Rabbinate…

You have all heard the joke.  It goes something like this:

“Most Jewish holidays can be described the same way:  They tried to kill us, we survived, let’s eat.”  

This punch line also serves as the refrain in “Passover Song,” a song touted by the New Jersey Jewish Standard as “a hilariously inaccurate account of the Passover story.” Having reviewed the lyrics myself, I’m not sure that I would call the song “hilarious,” though it certainly is inaccurate.
