The Connecticut Food Bank is a partner of Feeding America, the ntion’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity. It serves food banks across the state. There has been an increased demand for food created by rising prices, high unemployment, cuts in social services, and two natural disasters, Hurricane Irene and the late October snowstorm.
One of the ways the Connecticut Food Bank raises funds to purchase
food is through the Walk Against Hunger. In 2011, the walk raised
more than $240,000 providing enough food for 696,000 meals across the
state.
Temple Beth Sholom has had a team participating in this walk for
several years. Our teams have been enthusiastic, but small. This
year it would be great if more individuals and groups could join us.
It’s a wonderful way to involve the whole family in this social action
project. We’ve had children in strollers and dogs on leashes, and it
was terrific when a bat mitzvah girl took this as her mitzvah project.
We collect spare change as part of our contribution. Now that I no
longer need it as my Purim grogger, the familiar water jug is in the
back hall. Please don’t pass it by without adding a few coins.
The walk is on Sunday, May 6 in the afternoon. It begins from East
Rock Park, makes a circuit down Whitney and back out Orange St.,
ending back at the park. There’s music and food, and you might feel
tired after walking three miles, but you will certainly feel good
about helping such a worthy cause. Please let me know if you can join
us.
